Adult Basic Education (ABE):
ABE program provides basic literacy and life skills for individuals who desire to improve their academic level, with the intent of obtaining a GED, technical training, employment or citizenship. The program provides remediation based on an individual’s academic needs.
The ABE program is under the umbrella of Adult General Education (AGE). A student may register for ABE with Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) scores below 6.0, for academic, technical and personal success. This program strives to inspire and motivate students to become productive, self-sufficient members of society. This ABE system is based upon the assessed needs of the individual and the academic and employability requirements related to Florida’s comprehensive Career Education programs.
This program is competency based, thus completion time depends on the progress of each individual. Learning managers ensure that opportunities are provided for students to achieve their maximum potential in a minimum amount of time.
ABE instruction provides:
· Individualized basic skills related instruction to educationally disadvantaged students (including individuals with Limited English Proficiency) whose basic skills deficiencies may prevent success in vocational job preparatory programs or prevent completion of licensure vocational job preparatory programs of their choice.
ABE encompasses a combination of the following instructional components:
- ABE Basic Skills Related Instruction
- Reading
- Language
- Mathematics
- Basic Computer Literacy
TABE scores are good for two years. ABE is structured with fifteen classes between 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
A student has the option of a face-to-face or online class.
The ABE instructors maintain a student instructor ratio of 20-1.
The program is open entry, open exit thus allowing a student to compete when he/she meets their Basic Skills Requirement. Upon completion, the student will then be transferred to Applied Academics for Adult Education (AAAE) or General Educational Development (GED) depending on their career or technical program.
The program is completed when the student scores a 9.0 or above on all three subject areas. Sheridan Technical Center’s ABE program is located in building 12.
